CLEP/DSST Exams

CLEP®/DSST® Exams

CLEP®
The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States today, allowing students of all ages to earn college degrees faster by getting credit for what they already know.

DSST® (formerly DANTES Subject Standardized Tests)
The DSST® Program is an extensive series of examinations in college subjects that are compatible to the final or end-of-course examination in undergraduate courses.

Credit Awarded by VU
Vincennes University awards credit for college-level testing with the American Council on Education (ACE) recommended passing scores. There is no maximum amount of credit awarded, but only 45 semester hours can be used towards completion of a degree.  Credits awarded are subject to periodic review by Vincennes University faculty.

How to Take an Exam and Receive Credit

For CLEP® Exams:

  1. Contact your academic advisor and decide which exam you want/need to take.
  2. Go to the College Board website and register for the exam.
    1. If you are active duty, indicate that the test is DANTES funded, which will remove the cost of the exam
    2. When signing up for the exam, you can also choose where to send the transcript of your score.  The official transcript should be mailed directly to VU.
  3. Contact the Testing Center site to schedule the exam.

For DSST® Exams:

  1. Contact your academic advisor and decide which exam you want/need to take.
  2. Contact the Testing Center site to schedule your exam.  You’ll register on your testing day.
  3. Visit the DSST website to review the content of the exam and what materials you can use to study.
  4. On your test day, you’ll choose where the transcript of your scores will be sent by providing a school code.  VU’s score recipient school code for the Vincennes campus is 9382.
    1. Depending on where you test, you may use a different code.  If testing at a VU Military Education Site Location, the site staff will provide the code to you.
